Tygeria Mirabeau’s Surprise Rezday Party

On Wednesday October 7, Mystery’s manager Amythe Moonlight secretly IMed a number of people to ask them to drop over to the Heart of Mystery riverboat club at 4 PM SL time. The reason: a surprise rezday party for sim owner Tygeria Mirabeau. Tygeria had first appeared on Second Life four years ago, and a month after she held a birthday party for Amythe, it was time for the manager to return the favor. There was already a live event on schedule, and Amy was going to turn it into a birthday bash.

From Tygeria’s point of view, things went normally at first, people porting in, and singer Ichie Kamachi starting her live performance. Then all of a sudden, everyone went “Happy Rezday Tygeria!” to a stunned sim owner. After she got her composure back, she thanked everyone for the pleasant surprise.

The party and music went smoothly for a while, then the sim crashed, with people ending up elsewhere when they logged. Some of the people ended up in Zindra, leading to a few jokes the Lindens were trying to get the party a little wilder. The party was temporarily moved to a store, but eventually the sim was brought back online and people headed back. Tygeria joked that this was the work of the “masked lover” frequenting her sim in an attempt to be alone with Amy, though Amy swore no one came by to see her.

The “masked lover” Tygeria has been looking for was never caught, though a picture was taken showing an unidentified masked man dancing with Amy. No one seemed to recognize the avatar. Might this be the mystery Don Juan Tygeria has been after? So far, no one knows, and the 2000 Linden reward for the identity of the “Seducer” still stands.

Happy Birthday/Rezzday

There’s just something about a birthday party, or a rezz-day party as in Second Life people often prefer to celebrate that. Even among those who throw parties every week, these celebrations stand out.

Two friends of mine had birthday parties in SL a few months ago, Blarion Gazov and Nydia Tungsten. Nydia being a Sunweaver DJ, her party had lots of music and people dancing around, living it up, with a couple avatar designers showing up among the attendees. At one point, half of us were dancing on a “Carmeldansen” cube.

Blarion’s party was a surprise, planned by Aikun Neiro and Gwyendalin Gausman (real life daughter and mother). Aikun invited him over to their beach island on Fearly while the rest of us hid, then we rushed forward, “Happy Birthday Blarion!” After his, “Aw, gee ...” We all sat down for a fairly relaxed celebration. There was a little funning around, notably when one guy insisted on sitting on the hot grill, inspiring crack jokes if hot dogs came with “warm buns.”

On Labor Day weekend, two notable people had their parties, one birthday, and one rezzday. Pooky Amsterdam’s birthday was on Saturday September the 5th, and so she invited a number of friends and media audience regulars to a place. Hopping over, what we saw was a smaller version of her “The 1st Question” game show set. Among the people there was Chantel Harvey, a Machinima director, as were others on Pooky’s staff such as Kat2 Kit and Geo Meek.

Pooky explained she didn’t celebrate her rezzday as her experience in Second Life really didn’t begin until later, “The party was great. It inaugurated the new mini-home on Treet Island.” I was really glad to see Wiz & Texas there, and all my Friends. It really was a blastoid.”

On Sunday September the 6th, Tygeria Mirabeau gave her best friend Amythe Moonlight a surprise rezzday party. Live entertainment was part of the event, Lyn Carlberg and Taunter Goodnight. She sent regulars to the Heart of Mystery riverboat club notecards with the time of the party, and asking them not to tell Amy before the party, “For four years in SL, my Amy has been very wise, or foolish to not run away screaming. To me, she has been my guide and help, my teacher and my dearest friend.”

And the party went well, with many attending and a good time held by all. Tygeria herself got a surprise, her friend Jazzz Hermit logging in, taking a break from college. Amy did a little humoring around, “It’s my rez day and I will if i want to! You would do it too if it happened to youuu ...” But mostly, she felt humbled, “I have been blown away by all this, totally overwhelmed. I feel lucky to have such wonderful friends.”

So whether you’re a DJ, a sim & club manager, a media entertainer, or just a likable guy, there’s nothing quite like a birthday/rezzday party in Second Life.

How it all started

On November 8, 2006, our CEO JamesT Juno wrote his first article. Well, it wasn't his first article, but at least it was the first official SL-Newspaper article. From that day on, the SLN really took off.
Starting with the site, linking to several blogs, it really looked like a newspaper site and a lot has changed since then. We've moved sections around, a number of excellent writers joined us (James married) and basically, we're still a bunch of volunteers, enjoying working for the SL Newspaper. But .. it all started with that one article, written by the CEO and founder, JamesT Juno.
Or ... actually, the paper started about 2 years ago as an experiment, as James explained. With only about 40 readers daily, the year before the actual start of the SLN, he already had a blog that he called the SL-Newspaper. It was mostly about his newbie experiences in Second Life, and I found the real first article. And .. OMG .. I never realized that even our distinguished CEO, usually dressed up in his expensive suit, was once a newbie. And looked like one !!

Although new to Second Life, he wasn't new to writing and publishing. Even before this first article from September 2005, he had his own blog called '15 Timez', basically writing funny stories.
So, as I said, the SL Newspaper started out as just a small blog, but now has grown to a newspaper that's read and appreciated by around 10,000 people per day. Correction: 10k not-unique hits per day. Which means that some people actually check the paper more than once per day. Isn't that flattering :-)
All in all, and I'm sure I'm speaking on behalf of the entire staff and freelancers, we are very proud how he established that, how he made it grow into what the SL Newspaper is today. If he wasn't as persistant as he is, we wouldn't have all this fun working for the SLN and informing you people about things going on in Second Life.
And, to be honest, I'm very glad he lost the newbie spikey hair !! Now we just gotta get him to wear some jeans, instead of the CEO suit ....
